There are quite a few types of engines you can buy these days in your personal vehicle, so deciding which new vehicle is right for you is a bit more complex. More and more foreign car manufacturers have started offering diesel models in recent years, so the next question is: are petrol or diesel vehicles the better choice? Although gasoline cars are more popular than diesel cars in the US, diesel engines have almost half the market share in Europe. Are trends also working in this direction in the US?
Diesel Engines and Gas Engines: What’s the Difference?
Before you make a decision, you need to do your research and have some knowledge of each type of motor and its pros and cons.
Both gasoline and diesel engines use internal combustion where air enters the engine and combines with the fuel. In an effort to keep things simple, we won’t go into too much detail. However, the ignition process is where this varies for these types of engines. During the compression process, a spark plug ignites the fuel in a gas engine. Diesel engines do not have spark plugs, but simply “use extreme compression to generate the heat necessary for spontaneous ignition, also known as compression ignition.” This would damage a gasoline engine.
Pros and cons of diesel engines
Now, let’s look at the pros and cons of diesel engines!
Advantages of the diesel engine:
- Super towing capacity, improved torque and superior take-offs
- Improved fuel efficiency
- Improved noise level and smoother performance compared to older diesel models
- More efficiency, lower carbon emissions compared to older models
- The engine has fewer components and does not require tuning
Cons of the diesel engine:
- Lower power, slower speeds
- Fuel prices are more expensive and some gas stations may not have diesel
- Noisier than gasoline engines
- Emissions can emit harmful substances
- Maintenance and repairs can be more expensive
- Not all auto repair shops are experienced in performing diesel engine repairs
- Difficulty starting in cold weather as they do not have spark plugs
Diesel engines have come a long way and the improvements are quite evident. However, some of the old diesel stereotypes still exist today: terrible emissions, dirty or noisy rides and a “smelly experience” are just a few.
