OMV and its partners have made a gas discovery at 6607/3-1 S, 225 kilometers (139.8 miles) west of Sandnessjoen.
Preliminary estimates put the Velocette discovery at between 0.2 million cubic meters and 1.8 million cubic meters (7.06 million cubic feet and 63.57 million cubic feet) of oil equivalent recoverable, according to a press release from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD).
The Transocean Norge rig drilled the well, which is the first to be drilled under production license 1016, NPD said. The discovery is located 45 km (27.9 mi) southeast of the Aasta Hansteen field. The license was granted to Predefined Area Awards (APA) in 2018.
The three licensees, OMV (operator), Inpex Idemitsu and Longboat Japex, “will continue to evaluate the discovery,” according to the statement.
Transocean Norge started the drilling campaign in August. The purpose of the well was to test for oil in reservoir rocks in the Upper Cretaceous Nise Formation.
When drilling began, Longboat Japex noted that the Velocette well was estimated to contain unrisked average gross resources of 177 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe), 35 MMboe net to Longboat JAPEX Norge, with a geological probability of 30 percent success, according to the company. There are several follow-on opportunities within license PL1016 with aggregate unrisked average gross resources of 200 MMboe, which would be significantly diminished by success at the Velocette well, he said.
NPD said well 6607/3-1 S encountered a gas/condensate column of about nine meters (29.5 feet) in the Nise Formation, about five meters (16.4 feet) of which found in a sandstone deposit with a quality that varies from moderate to moderate. really good. The Nise Formation has a total thickness of 55 meters (180 feet). Gas/water contact was found in the well, NPD said.
The well was not formation tested, but data acquisition and sampling were performed.
Well 6607/3-1 S was drilled to the respective vertical depths and measured 3,645 meters (11,960 ft) and 3,770 meters (12,368 ft) below sea level. The well was completed in the Upper Cretaceous Nise Formation. The water depth at the site is 475 meters (1558 feet). The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.
The Transocean Norge drilling rig will now move to production license 836 S, where Wintershall Dea is the operator, NPD said.
