Wellesley Petroleum has flagged two wildland wells in production license 1148 in the North Sea, 15.5 miles northwest of the Troll field.
License operator Wellesley drilled wells 35/10-10 S and 35/10-10 A, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said in a statement.
According to the statement, the primary exploration objective of well 35/10-10 S was to test for oil in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Etive and Oseberg Formations in the Brent Group. The secondary exploration objective of well 35/10-10 S was to test for oil in the Early Jurassic Cook Formation.
The objective of the evaluation well 35/10-10 A was the oil-water contact at a lower position in the structure, and to collect liquid samples from the aquifer.
The 35/10-10 S well encountered a 690-foot gas condensate column in the Ness, Etive and Oseberg formations, of which a total of 295 feet was sandstone reservoir with low to moderate reservoir quality, the regulator said.
In the Cook Formation, the well encountered a 230-foot gas condensate column, of which a total of 75 feet was a poor-grade sandstone reservoir. A 42-foot oil column was also found in the Early Jurassic Amundsen Formation in the Dunlin Group, of which a total of 42 feet was a poor-grade sandstone reservoir.
The 35/10-10 S well was drilled to a vertical depth of 13,221 feet below sea level and was completed in the Early Jurassic Amundsen Formation. Extensive data acquisition and sampling has been carried out, management said
Well 35/10-10 A was drilled further down in the structure, 2,950 feet west of the main well, and encountered a 787-foot gas condensate column in the Ness, Etive, Oseberg, and Cook formations, of which 165 feet was a low- to moderate-grade sandstone reservoir. Water was found in the Cook formation from a vertical depth of 13,640 feet below sea level.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the size of the discovery is between 317.8 million standard cubic feet (9.0 million standard cubic meters) and 1.6 billion standard cubic feet (46 million standard cubic meters) of recoverable oil equivalent. The licensees will begin early-stage development studies and are considering additional appraisal wells in the discovery, management said.
These are the first and second exploration wells of production license 1148, awarded in APA2021.
The water depth at the site is 1180 feet. The wells have been permanently plugged and abandoned.
The wells were drilled by the Deepsea Yantai drilling rig, which will now drill the wild 25/7-11 S well in production license 984 in the North Sea, where DNO Norge is the operator.
