While catalytic converter theft has grabbed a lot of headlines in recent months, it’s not exactly a new problem. What IS a new problem, however, is the fact that the number of thefts continues to rise.
According to a recent Carfax report, approximately 153,000 catalytic converters were stolen in 2022 alone. This includes thefts that resulted in insurance claims, but also thefts that were not covered by insurance. At our Tempe auto repair shop, we can attest to the increase in catalytic converter replacements after completing just under 100 in 2022.
Why is catalytic converter theft so common?
The increased prevalence of catalytic converter theft could be due to a variety of factors, such as unemployment rates or the pandemic. But regardless of why the number continues to rise, the reason for theft remains the same.
Catalytic converters are anti-pollution devices that play a fundamental role in a vehicle’s emissions system. Inside each converter are several precious metals and this is what are thieves looking for?
The most common of these metals are platinum, palladium and rhodium. They are used to convert harmful pollutants from vehicle exhaust into less harmful emissions. But they also have a high market value, making them attractive targets for thieves who can sell them for scrap.
What are the main cars destined for the Southwest?
According to Carfax research, where you live plays a big role in determining whether or not your vehicle will be a target for catalytic converter theft. As you might expect, thefts are more common in high population areas, but the type of vehicle also matters.
According to Carfax, these are the top 10 vehicles most attractive to catalytic converter thieves in the Southwest (Arizona, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Texas):
- Ford F Series Trucks
- Toyota Tundra
- Toyota Tacoma
- Chevrolet Silverado
- Toyota Prius
- Honda Accord
- Ford Expedition
- Honda CR-V
- Mitsubishi Outlander
- Ford Explorer
Why are these vehicles so popular? In most cases, it’s because catalytic converters are easily accessible and can be removed with just a little work. For hybrids, like the Prius, it’s because their catalytic converters have a higher concentration of precious metals.
How can you prevent your catalytic converter from being stolen?
If you drive one of the vehicles listed above, you already have a target on your back. But instead of getting a different vehicle and having to deal with today’s high new car prices, there are a few things you can do to reduce your risk:
- Park in well-lit areas. A would-be thief might think twice about being more likely to be seen.
- Park where video surveillance can see your vehicle. If this doesn’t prevent theft altogether, it could at least help authorities identify and catch a thief.
- Park it in a locked garage or manned parking lot when possible.
- Use the theft deterrent services of your local auto repair shop.
- Make sure the car alarm is activated when the vehicle is not in use.
