HYDERABAD: Traffic was affected after 18 tonnes of motor oil spilled on the road from a moving truck near the NMDC office at Masab Tank on Wednesday.
The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. when a truck carrying several plastic drums of motor oil was heading towards the Masab tank crossing, he said. Nagar traffic police inspector Ram Prasad.
Precautionary measures such as tying the barrels with rope were not taken, Prasad said. As the vehicle took a curve near NMDC at high speed, seven barrels fell and broke on the road. The oil spill split up to the Masab Tank Flyover section.
Some motorists, who were unaware of the oil spill, skidded and crashed with minor injuries. Oil-covered tire tracks spread across the road below the flyover, causing some motorists to suffer there as well.
Upon receiving information, the traffic police together with GHMCThe Disaster Response Force (DRF) reached the site and started directing traffic away from the site. Traffic coming from the airport into the city was affected by the oil spill. Vehicular movement was disrupted on Banjara Hills Highway No. 1. Commuters from the Old City heading towards Hitech City also faced traffic problems.
Police had to set up diversions, stopping traffic towards the Masab Tank Crossing at around 10.30am, leading to a massive traffic snarl till 12.00pm as oncoming vehicles of the airport were severely blocked.
Meanwhile, GHMC workers were deployed to put truckloads of sand and mud on the oil-spilled road as absorbents before vehicles could travel on the flyover. At 1:00 p.m., the situation returned to normal, as the police managed to seize the tuker vehicle and arrest the driver identified as Abhimanyu (30). “We have recorded one FIR against the truck driver for negligent driving and endangering life and arrested him,” Ram Prasad told TOI.
Cops explained that the truck driver was transporting the barrels from Thimmapur area to Balanagar under the orders of his boss Muneer.
