Ford is expanding an earlier recall and issuing a new one for more than 125,000 SUVs and trucks because the engines could fail and catch fire.
The recall includes the 2020-2023 model year Lincoln Corsair and Ford Escape SUVs, as well as 2020-2023 Maverick compact pickup trucks with hybrid engines, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report cited by Reuters.
According to Ford, problems with the engine’s manufacturing can cause it to malfunction, release engine oil or vapor, and increase the risk of fire. This could lead to accidents and injuries.
Ford’s first recall related to engine problems involved 100,000 US-made Corsairs, Escapes and Mavericks last July. The company had received 23 reports worldwide of fires or smoke coming from the engine.
The car company said Tuesday it had received at least three reports of vehicles catching fire after receiving a fix for the problems last year.
Ford and NHTSA urge owners of these recalled vehicles to park and turn off the engine if they hear unexpected engine noises, see smoke, or notice a reduction in vehicle performance.
The automaker is developing an updated fix for the engine’s woes.
