One in five new cars was a Tesla Model Y.

In May, the Norwegian passenger car market expanded by almost 16 percent year-on-year to 13,342 units. The year-to-date figure at the end of May was 50,983 (down 5 percent year-on-year).
Sales of plug-in electric cars are growing even faster, taking an ever-increasing share of the market. According to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), 11,865 new passenger plug-in cars were registered last month (up 21% year-on-year), which is around 88.9% of the total volume (compared to 85.1 % of a year ago). .
Most importantly for us, all-electric car registrations in May rose 28 percent year-on-year to 10,773, representing 80.7 percent of total volume, compared to 73.2 percent from a year ago
Plug-in hybrids were down again, this time by 21 percent year-over-year (17th consecutive decline). It is worth saying that together with non-rechargeable hybrids, electrified vehicles represent 96.7 percent of the total volume.
Statistics of the month (only passenger cars):
- BEV: 10,773 (+28%) and market share of 80.7%.
- PHEV: 1,092 (-21%) and 8.2% market share.
- Total: 11,865 (+21%) and market share of 88.9%.
So far this year, more than 45,000 new electric passenger cars have been registered in Norway, accounting for approximately 90 percent of total car sales.
Registration of connected cars up to the date of the year:
- BEV: 42,475 (+0.1%) and a market share of 83.3%.
- PHEV: 3,335 (-29%) and 6.5% market share.
- Total: 45,810 (-3%) and market share of 89.9%.
For reference, in 12 months of 2022, more than 153,000 new plug-in electric cars (87.8 percent of the total volume) were registered in Norway.
In terms of models, Norway seems to be in love with the Tesla Model Y, which with 2,691 new registrations last month, has more than 20 percent share. During the first five months of 2023, about 12,325 units (24.2 percent of all new cars) were registered. No other model comes close to this level.
For reference, the Volkswagen ID.4 is second best (738 units in May and 2,712 YTD). In May, the new BMW iX1 achieved a relatively strong result with 594 units sold.
As usual in Norway, the top 20 list mostly includes crossover/SUV models.
