KHis Starmer has lifted the lid on what to expect if he wins the election: rising energy prices or blackouts, or both (“Starmer plans to block all new North Sea oil and gas development”, News, week past). Stopping the further exploitation of our fossil reserves may seem like a clever ploy to attract green votes, but it does not change the reality. Without adequate nuclear capacity and without the means to store electricity in sufficient quantities, we desperately need North Sea oil and gas, especially since our politicians have run away from the energy riches we could tap into through fracking.
Dependence on intermittent wind and sun will leave us the weak nation of Europe, desperate for foreign supplies to keep the lights on. President Macron has done it
