WHEATLAND, Missouri (May 27, 2023) – Devin Moran was declared the winner of the 31st annual Lucas Oil Show-Me 100 presented by the Missouri Division of Tourism after initial winner Ricky Thornton Jr. was penalized four points after the race for a drop limiter violation.
Moran won a top $50,000 payday in the crown jewel event and becomes the ninth different winner in the last nine Show-Me 100 events. Moran is also the 16th different driver to win the traditional event Memorial Weekend in its 31 years of history.
Tim McCreadie was second in the final summary with Spencer Hughes, Chris Ferguson and Thornton completing the top five drivers.
Jonathan Davenport, looking for a breakout weekend after winning the Cowboy Classic on Thursday night and the Don and Billie Gibson Tribute on Friday night, grabbed the lead going down the green flag.
Thornton would run in second place for the first 20 laps before McCreadie was able to fight for him. McCreadie held on to second until lap 31 when Thornton regained the position. Hughes was one of the fastest cars on the track at the time, moving from eighth to third and finally to second on lap 36. After a restart on lap 37, Hughes relinquished second place to Thornton.
Thornton would trail Davenport as the two went back and forth in the battle for the lead. Thornton passed Davenport for the point on lap 58 and became the first non-Davenport driver to lead a lap in three race nights. Thornton pulled away from Davenport stretching his lead to several car lengths.
Overton’s night ended just a few laps from the finish as he brought out the caution when he made heavy contact with the wall coming out of turn four. After a late restart, Thornton passed Moran heading into the checkers, but would drop to fifth in the running order after post-race tech.
In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, for the seventh time in his career, Moran was asked about the biggest win of his career. “This is like the best and worst win of my life. I just won the monstrous Show-Me 100 and $50,000, but Ricky was the best car in the field and right before that last caution he was making a lot of time in one and two. I was just charging really hard to get by, it felt really good. Now I don’t know what our lap times were compared to the 20RT before that caution. I got a really good restart for sure.”
Moran credited his win to Kevin Rumley in his post-race interview. “First of all, there’s a badass son of a gun in North Carolina named Kevin Rumley. This win, 110% goes to that man. My whole career has been working our tails off. We’ve worked so hard hours as you can imagine this week.Obviously I want to thank Roger [Sellers] and his family for giving me this opportunity.” It was the second Show-Me 100 win for the Double Down Motorsports team when they hit Victory Lane in 2021 with Hudson O’Neal behind the wheel.
McCreadie moved up one place at the finish to claim second place and a $20,000 payday. “I didn’t know until I saw Overton take out the caution, I didn’t know if they had set a lap. We’ve done our best and we’ve had a bit of luck, and we’ll take it.”
Hughes, who came in second during the race, completed the Big River Steel Podium in third place. “It’s great to get another good finish. We’ve been doing really well here lately. We have struggled in the long runs in the past. We’ve been quick in them before, we’ve had a lot of top-five racing, but to finish one on the podium means a lot to us. We were very good there for a long time. In the end, these other guys could get through three and four more consistently than I could. We are pleased to have another good race.”
The winner’s Roger Sellers-owned Double Down Motorsports Longhorn chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Lazydays RV, C&W Trucking, Lucas Oil Products, McHugh Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep., Bilstein Shocks, CarSourceAuto .com, Red Oak Pub, Smoky Mountain Speedway and Lincoln Smith Racing.
Rounding out the top ten finishers were Dillon McCowan, Tyler Erb, Garrett Alberson, Daulton Wilson and Ricky Weiss.
