As Jaguar TCS Racing’s Official EV Fluid Partner since 2019, Castrol works with the team to co-design advanced EV fluids and lubricants to achieve the most sustainable performance and solutions that support the future of electric vehicle efficiency .
“The use of refined electric vehicle transmission fluid is a great demonstration of circularity in action on the racetrack and supports the company’s wider ambition to adopt circular economy principles so that we can reduce the use of virgin materials,” says Rosella Cardone, Director and Head of JLR’s Sustainability Office. “We have a clear goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2039 and building sustainability into JLR’s DNA.”
The engine test bench
Season 9 has been a testbed for Castrol, using the Jaguar I-TYPE 6 as a fast-paced laboratory to test the comparable performance of a more circular transmission fluid. Monaco saw Castrol ON EV transmission fluid deployed in Formula E’s pressure cooker environment, following successful tests earlier in the season in Berlin.
Waste transmission fluid from all of Jaguar TCS Racing’s testing and development activity is collected and re-refined using a technique to recover its primary constituent base oil. This more circular base oil is mixed with performance additives to make a new batch of the EV transmission fluid, which is then deployed in the Jaguar I-TYPE 6 gearbox in place of the fluid containing virgin base oil.
Test field for the road
Both Jaguar TCS Racing and Castrol will collect key data within the content ecosystem to develop a technical and practical understanding of the technology and processes around more circular transmission fluid systems, with the ultimate aim of applying the learnings of the race track in road cars.
“We are very proud to be the first Formula E motorsport team to deploy this circular process, using refined base oil, in a race car and set the standard for pioneering circularity within the paddock” , adds James Barclay, Jaguar. TCS Racing Team Director.
“In this incredibly competitive World Championship, we can’t compromise on performance, so the successful use of a no-compromise circular oil is a game-changer. I think this is a key discovery and helps us learn what is possible when we push the limits of EV fluids. for the benefit of future road cars.”
