We have said several times with videos that SUVs are unstable and can easily tip over. This is yet another incident involving the Toyota Fortuner, considered by many to be the best SUV in the country. The accident between the Toyota Corolla Altis and the Fortuner shows how unstable SUVs can be.
The incident is reported by the Delhi Technological University. According to eyewitnesses, after a light shower in the evening, these two cars were crossing each other. Somehow the Altis and Fortuner lost control. The Altis crashed into the side of the Fortuner, causing it to overturn.

We can see the video in which the Toyota Fortuner rests on its side and the occupants get out of the car. No injuries were reported and all occupants of both vehicles were safe. The Fortuner, however, is emitting a massive amount of white smoke which indicates that it is burning its engine oil. It is likely because of the position of the car.
The Toyota Fortuner has sustained damage on the sides, while the front end of the Toyota Corolla Altis is properly smashed and unrecognisable. The safety equipment on both cars worked well.
SUVs tend to tip over
A few weeks ago, we saw a Tata Nano causing a Mahindra Thar to overturn after a crash. While many people questioned how a top-rated Mahindra Thar was overruled by a zero-star rating Tata Nano, the answer lies in the stability of the vehicle. Well, SUVs are unstable by design. Although SUVs have become massively popular around the world, they were originally designed to be slow and tough to tackle rough terrain. However, people who buy SUVs rarely drive them off-road these days driving the sales of 4×2 SUVs, which aren’t even considered true SUVs.
SUVs, with their higher ground clearance, have a tendency to overturn more easily compared to hatchbacks or standard sedans. It is important to be very careful when driving SUVs at high speeds. The high ground clearance shifts the vehicle’s center of gravity away from the road surface, resulting in greater instability. That’s why cornering at high speed in an SUV can be unnerving, while it feels more stable in low-profile cars like sedans.
The increased risk of tipping and falling is attributed to the higher ground clearance of SUVs. As a result, it is crucial that drivers, especially those moving from sedans, take extra care and attention while operating SUVs.
