Thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars have skyrocketed in North America over the past two years, largely thanks to explainer TikTok videos that make it easy to separate them from their owners. But none of the Korean carmakers’ cars feature in the UK’s car theft hall of shame, whose Top 10 league table contains six different Range Rover models.
A new study comparing the number of thefts of a particular model with the number of examples of those models registered for the road in the UK by Confused.com car insurance found that the Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic HSE D180 is the most stolen car in the UK.
Yes, a diesel SUV with just 178bhp (180PS) is the driving force behind car theft in the UK, presumably because the R-Dynamic model’s sporty interior and exterior translates into a lot of cash when the cars they separate Second on the list goes to the Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic Black P400, more of which were technically stolen, although since they’re also licensed, their theft rate is fractionally lower than the Velar’s.

Unfortunately for Land Rover, and worryingly for Range Rover Sport owners, the Range Sport appears four times in the top 10 for both Velars, but full-size Range Rover owners can sleep easy. The halo model is not listed anywhere.
But Land Rover isn’t the only luxury brand to be delighted by the figures compiled by insurance comparison site Confused.com, with the Lexus RX appearing in third and fourth place. That leaves just two slots for the Ford Fiesta Zetec S. The Red Edition and the Black Edition are pretty much neck and neck, but it seems thieves marginally prefer the red version, even if it means the Escape doesn’t she is so sneaky
Given the numbers in the stolen model table, it’s no surprise that Land Rover easily wins the ‘most stolen brand’ competition. Almost 1 per cent of registered Land Rovers were stolen, compared with 0.3 per cent for Mercedes, which came second in the table, and 0.29 per cent for Ford and BMW, which be third and fourth.
