Transmission issues keep the Chevy Traverse from being the best midsize SUV
The Chevrolet Traverse is a solid but flawed midsize SUV. It has transmission issues, which means used Chevy Traverse models aren’t always the best choice. These problems started with the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse and lasted until 2018. However, even some of the later models have minor transmission problems. There are also reports of several models, mostly from 2018, not changing parking.
The worst transmission problem for 2009-2018 Traverse owners is transmission failure. Fortunately, Chevrolet issued a technical service bulletin to try to fix the problem. Also, there are reports of later models not responding to start. Some drivers reported that putting the car in gear and pressing the accelerator caused the vehicle to just slow down in forward motion as if it were in neutral. This problem started with the 2015 Chevy Traverse.
Common Chevrolet Traverse Engine Problems
Common engine issues are another reason the Chevrolet Traverse isn’t among the best midsize SUVs. There are many reports of the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse engine leaving people stranded. Apparently, the engine would stop working while in use, which can also be a safety issue with the SUV. Although the automaker fixed the problem in later years, it still existed until around the 2015 model year. However, later models have far fewer complaints.
Another engine problem that the Chevy Traverse has is excessive oil consumption. This problem mostly occurs with the 2009 Chevy Traverse, but it is a problem that owners of all model years should be aware of. A vehicle with more oil than expected could lead to bigger problems, such as premature engine failure. Of course, excessive oil consumption also results in reduced performance.
Several issues also make it not the best mid-size SUV
Used Chevy Traverse models are also not the best idea because the vehicle suffers from steering problems. This is mainly a problem for Chevy Traverse model years 2009 through 2011. The problem is that the wheel would become difficult to turn, which increases the risk of accidents. The steering problem mostly occurs between 80,000 and 110,000 miles on the odometer.
According to Consumer Reports, the vehicle also has air bag problems. These issues exist for 2014-2017 Chevy Traverse models. There was a recall for the defective airbags. Unfortunately, the inflator would break in some cases. Therefore, sharp objects can cause injuries to the driver and/or passengers.
Again, the Chevrolet Traverse is a midsize SUV overall. However, it’s not the best mid-size SUV because it’s so flawed. While imperfect, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a pretty safe bet.
