A man has died after a person shot him while the two were in separate vehicles on Interstate 76 near state Route 21 in Norton, according to the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
The medical examiner’s office said that around 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, the 40-year-old man was traveling eastbound in a vehicle on I-76 near state Route 21 when a person who was traveling in another vehicle fired several shots at his vehicle. , which stopped when it hit the concrete divider.
The man was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with an apparent gunshot wound and died of his injuries around 6:15 p.m.
The medical examiner’s office will report once the man is positively identified and his family is notified.
The Ohio Department of Transportation previously warned motorists to avoid the eastbound lanes of I-76 in Norton Wednesday night.
A 6:25 p.m. Norton advisory from Nixle also advised drivers to avoid that section of the interstate, saying it would be closed for an “unknown” amount of time. As of 9:15 p.m., ODOT cameras at the intersection of I-76 and State Route 21 were showing normal traffic. A minute later, Norton lifted his advisory.
Norton Councilman Doug DeHarpart said he went to the scene near the Easton Road overpass Wednesday night and saw several officers standing in the middle of I-76. He counted about nine Norton and state troopers at the scene about 8:38 p.m
He said it looked like the police were looking for something on the road.
