The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Tuesday during a traffic stop in East Oakland after he rammed a stolen vehicle into three Sheriff’s Office squad cars and injured an officer, according to the authorities.
Deputies tried to stop Jose Barajas-Avalos, 27, of Oakland, after locating him in a stolen car as he traveled westbound on Interstate 580 near Estudillo Avenue, said Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
Barajas-Avalos eventually stopped in a parking lot near the intersection of East 12th Street and 35th Avenue after deputies tried to detain him, authorities added. He then rammed the stolen car into three patrol vehicles, disabling two of them and injuring one officer.
The injured officer was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
Although Barajas-Avalos fled the area, an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office helicopter followed him until the stolen vehicle was located in the 700 block of High Street, authorities said. He was later located in a parked vehicle and arrested.
Barajas-Avalos was booked into the Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft, eluding police, possession of a stolen vehicle and assault on a peace officer, according to Alameda County Jail records.
He is scheduled to appear Thursday morning at the Wiley M. Manuel Courthouse for his arraignment hearing, jail records show.
