First, let the mower engine cool down before checking the air filter. You should also disconnect the spark plug wire before working on the engine for safety. A foam air filter looks like a sponge. You can replace your mower’s foam air filter less often than a paper filter, especially if you keep it clean regularly.
If your lawnmower has a fuel prime button that you press before starting the mower, the foam air filter should be in that area of the engine. It will be behind a plastic cover that should pop out without the need for tools. However, some models may have one or two screws holding the cover in place.
If the foam filter is damaged, it’s time to replace it. Otherwise, you can wash it. You may want to wear disposable gloves. Rinse off the foam with water from a garden hose or bucket. The suds will build up grease over time, so adding a little dish soap while rinsing can help remove the grease. Squeeze the foam and continue to rinse it several times until it is clean. Drain excess liquid from foam before wrapping in paper towels and squeezing to absorb remaining water. Then let it dry completely for about an hour in the sun before reassembling the filter cover.
