PLANTATION, Fla. – Burglars are in and out in minutes and then when residents of a Plantation apartment complex go out to get into their cars, they find them on top of bricks and without wheels.
They believe the scammers are targeting a specific make and model of car, Honda Civics.
Nichelle Gordon is a victim of thieves. “People work hard for their things. I put money in my car. I love my car,” she said through tears.
Residents of the Spectra at Plantation apartment complex are overwhelmed with an unexpected expense, a major inconvenience and a breach of their security as they learn that scammers are literally running them over.
“My neighbor knocked on my door and said my car was on bricks,” Gordon said.
He left his apartment to find his red Honda Civic with all four wheels stolen. The thieves were seen on his car’s dash cam just before 4am. Both had their faces covered and one was wearing a tire jack.
From one angle of the video, you can see the Honda pull up and then down just as the thieves take off with expensive rims and tires.
Gordon said the rims cost about $600 each and the tires add up to about $3,200.
But Gordon learned that this isn’t the first time this has happened to his community or others close to him.
Nichelle’s neighbor Jolisa also fell victim to the scammers in March. She also has a Honda Civic that was left on bricks. It cost him more than $5,000 to replace the stolen parts.
Jolisa has a message for brazen thieves.
“Just be a good citizen. If you want something, do it the old fashioned way; let’s win it the way we have. You are affecting people’s lives and the way they live.”
Local 10 News has reached out to Plantation police to find out if they have seen an increase in these types of crimes in that community. We are waiting for the answer. As for the apartment complex, they said they don’t have security, but are trying to get video to provide to police in hopes of getting a better look at the criminals.
Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crimestoppers at (954) 493-8477.
