HOLLYWOOD, Florida (WPEC) — A baby has died in a road accident in Florida, according to authorities.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said the crash happened Thursday on Interstate 75 around 4:30 p.m. EDT.
FHP said the 35-year-old driver of a black 2016 GMC was illegally stopped, partially between the northbound inside lane of the I-75 express lanes. The 29-year-old driver of a white Ford truck was traveling northbound in the express lanes of I-75 in the inside lane.
Investigators said the driver of the GMC appeared to be tending to a baby in the back seat of the SUV, while it was improperly stopped in the travel lane. Suddenly, the front of the Ford collided with the rear of the GMC.
FHP said the GMC was pushed northwest and came to rest in the express lanes of northbound I-75 against the concrete barrier wall. The van also drifted into the express lanes but came to a controlled stop.
The child, no more than 2 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the fire department.
FHP said the investigation is still ongoing.
