Water treatment solutions provider Veolia Water Technologies’ patented solutions for wastewater treatment and biogas production are already in service at dairy company Pınar Süt’s factory in İzmir, Türkiye.
This allows the company to comply with the new dumping legislation and meet its environmental commitments, reducing carbon emissions by 17% and generating substantial savings in natural gas.
Pınar Süt was founded in Izmir in 1973, producing dairy products. Currently, the company has three production facilities in Izmir, Eskisehir and Şanlıurfa. Pınar Süt is also engaged in the production and sale of butter, cream, fruit juices, mayonnaise, ketchups, puddings, honey, sauces, jams and jellies, desserts and powdered products.
The company exports its products to more than 30 countries in the world.
Pınar Süt has acted on its sustainable development ambition with the recent wastewater treatment plant built by Veolia Water Technologies. The treated water is suitable for reuse, with additional tertiary treatment, for certain applications in the factory, such as washing water, which contributes to Pınar Süt’s sustainability goals.
Two technologies patented by Veolia are at the heart of the process that allows the production of valuable biogas. Wastewater first passes through an Idraflot dissolved air flotation (DAF) screen and unit to retain grease, oil and grease (FOG) and suspended solids before entering the Biobed EGSB granular biomass anaerobic treatment unit , where more than 80% of the chemical demand for oxygen. is removed
This treatment stage produces around 45% of the biogas generated in the plant.
The FOG retained in the DAF is combined with other organic waste and sent to a Biobulk CSTR unit for purification and biogas production.
Since 2011, corporate carbon footprint calculations and report studies have been carried out at Pınar Süt. Consequently, the company continuously carries out activities aimed at reducing its carbon emissions by 15%.
The 3 600 m3/d wastewater treatment plant allows a total daily production of 8 980 Nm3 of biogas which is used in the factory’s boilers, which represents a considerable saving of natural gas and a significant contribution to Pınar Süt’s sustainability goals.
“Thanks to the projects implemented in the Pınar Süt factory, the gains of these holistic plants give us confidence for the future and further steps in the name of our previous sustainability policy,” says the director of the Pınar Süt Izmir plant. Ozlem Yalcin.
“This project perfectly illustrates Veolia’s purpose, which is to act and contribute to ecological transformation. We are proud to bring our expertise to Pınar Süt through our advanced technologies that enable the reuse of treated wastewater and the production of clean, renewable energy, reducing pressure on local fresh water resources and environmental footprint of the facility,” Veolia Water Technologies. Middle East CEO Thierry Froment concludes.
