The E90 generation BMW M3 is a great machine, but it has its fair share of reliability issues. One owner experienced the car’s duality firsthand when its engine failed spectacularly while driving at high speed on a highway in Europe.
Instagram user bestofschaefchen posted a video on Monday showing his BMW M3 sedan apparently revving its engine while driving under an underpass with cameras mounted on each end. Cameras capture the very moment the car’s engine fails, sending a massive cloud of blue smoke into the air.
Warning, there is foul language, so viewer discretion is advised.

The video from inside the car is even more entertaining as it shows the same moment the M3 displays the check engine alert on the iDrive system alongside this early 2010 BMW buzzer, the same thing that haunted me throughout my E60 M5 ownership.
The clip then cuts to the car pulled over to the side of the road with the hood up. The entire engine compartment and hood are covered in a thick layer of engine oil. “Rest in peace, M3 E90,” says the driver. “I might need a new engine now.”
We don’t doubt it.
