The combustion engine has received a lifeline. European law requiring all new cars sold from 2035 to be zero-emissions, effectively eliminating ICE cars, has been amended to provide an exemption for cars running on synthetic fuels.
Cars that run on these e-fuels still produce tailpipe emissions, but the fuel is considered carbon-neutral because carbon is consumed in the production process. The exemption means that BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini will be able to sell traditional high-performance ICE vehicles in Europe to those willing to pay handsomely for the privilege.
E-fuels are currently produced on such a small scale that a gallon costs around $189 (£44/€50 per liter) just to produce, never mind sell, according to the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. This makes it 100 times more expensive than gasoline, and even if the cost drops below $1 per liter to produce once large-scale production begins, it is likely to cost considerably more than gasoline conventional to the pump. No wonder Iveco boss Gerrit Marx recently compared e-fuels to champagne for cars.
Your average millionaire Lamborghini owner might not balk at the idea of spending a few hundred dollars to get his rocks off his 2035 Lambo V12 on a Saturday afternoon because he can afford it and the money he’s dumping in the tank they’re buying an incredible experience that an electric alternative can’t match. But what about the person who buys a used BMW M car with an ICE engine a few years after 2035?

To prevent people with post-2035 ICE cars from filling up with cheaper traditional gas, renegade combustion cars will need to be fitted with some sort of special filler neck that can only accommodate one fuel pump nozzle anyway special, or have some kind of ECU. code that detects an attempt to save money cheats in progress and does not allow the car to run. But if you’re buying a used M car, chances are you’re not as rich as the new Lambo, so you can’t just drop a bunch of money on every filler.
So, with today’s gas prices wherever you live as a starting point, how much more would you be willing to pay for a gallon of e-fuel to drive a combustion car? Thirty percent more? Fifty percent? One hundred?
We must make it clear that this European ruling does not change anything that is happening in North America, where California has also pledged to ban the sale of new cars that produce tailpipe emissions, and other states are sure to follow suit example But it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that e-fuels could also get an exemption in North America, so you can play too.
