This month, Lisbon will become the latest European city to ban traffic from its centre.
The plan, which will be introduced for a three-month trial period on April 26, will ban cars from driving (but not a) the heart of downtown Lisbon. A larger zone beyond this will prohibit access to most vehicles over 3.5 metric tonnes, including tour buses, but excluding all forms of public transport, between 8am and 8pm: 00 After the introduction of the zones, cars trying to cross the city will be directed to a semi-circular ring of main roads beyond the center of Lisbon, which will act as a de facto ring road. Although the plan will not be a total ban on cars, it could significantly reduce traffic in the historic center of the Portuguese capital.
