Three people are dead after a car went into the Anacostia River late Thursday evening.
Police were seen near Anacostia Drive Southeast and the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge overnight and early Friday morning.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the car entered the water from the Anacostia Park side of the river. It’s unclear which street the car was traveling on before entering the river, but police believe it’s likely Anacostia Drive SE.
D.C. police and fire personnel organized rescue efforts where the car went into the water, with at least one boat still in the water as of 5:30 a.m. and a tow truck with cables attached to a dark vehicle in an attempt to remove him. of the river
The incident began Thursday night as a search and rescue, but around 12:30 a.m. Friday, DC Fire confirmed on Twitter that one person was found dead inside the car.
It is not clear if the other two victims were also found inside the car. It’s still unclear why the car went into the river in the first place.
“Unfortunately, this will be a recovery rather than a rescue,” the statement said on Twitter.
The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge sidewalk was partially closed Friday morning while police investigated.
