Tanker Success 9 has been located with all crew accounted for, Dryad Global’s latest Maritime Security Threat Advisory (MSTA) has announced.
“It is understood that the pirates stole the cargo and property of the ship’s crew before leaving the ship,” the MSTA said.
“The incident involving the Success 9 is the third such incident since November 22, with two incidents occurring south of Abidjan,” Dryad’s MSTA added.
“Incidents are assessed to be highly targeted, with a very similar methodology and therefore the recent spate of incidents is not assessed to represent a fundamental shift in the risk profile towards wider commercial transport across the region,” the MSTA continued.
In a statement published on its website, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) revealed that it had been updated that Success 9 had been located off the coast of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on 15 April at 5pm Singapore time.
“A commercial vessel, Monjasa Sprinter, passing by had earlier received a distress call from Success 9. The captain of Monjasa Sprinter reported the location of Success 9 to the Company Safety Officer (CSO) d ‘the latter,” the MPA said in the statement. .
“The CSO updated MPA who immediately informed the IFC and Monrovia regional MRCC. An Ivorian Navy patrol vessel was deployed to confirm and board the successful 9. All the crew, including the Singaporean crew, were safe and in good health. The ship has since arrived safely at the port of Abidjan,” AMPA added.
In the statement, the MPA said it has advised all Singapore-registered vessels to exercise caution and implement the West African Best Management Practices (BMP WA) guidelines when operating in the region to mitigate threats associated with piracy.
“Companies should also periodically review their ship security assessment and plan in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code,” the MPA said in the statement.
“Companies are encouraged to report all hacking activity, including actual and attempted attacks, as well as suspicious sightings, to local authorities,” the AMP added.
In his previous MSTA, which was published on April 11, Dryad stated this Success 9 had been embarked 310 nm SSW Abidjan. In a statement posted on its website the same day, the MPA said it received a report that the tanker “was boarded by unidentified persons about 300 nautical miles off the coast of Abidjan, Ivory Coast , on April 10, 2023, at about 10:00 p.m. (Singapore time)”.
“There are 20 crew members of various nationalities on board the vessel, one of whom is a Singapore citizen,” the MPA said in the statement, adding that it was working closely with the vessel’s owner, the Regional Coordination Center for Maritime Rescue of Monrovia and the Information Service. Fusion Center at the Changi Command and Control Center “to monitor the situation and provide necessary assistance.”
In a statement posted on its site on April 13, the MPA said the owner of Success 9 had updated the MPA that it was “still unable to establish communications with the vessel”.
“Apart from the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Monrovia, the AMP has contacted other authorities in the region, including Ivory Coast and Ghanaian authorities for assistance,” he said the MPA in this release.
“Ivorian authorities have deployed their air and sea assets in the vicinity of the last known position of the vessel,” it added.
