Yes, the Ram 1500 could have a massive recall on the horizon as an investigation spans multiple model years. A faulty fuel pump that is also used in rugged models can cause catastrophic failure in 2014-2022 Ram 1500 models.
Is the Ram 1500 having fuel pump problems?
Perhaps, the Ram 1500 is currently in hot water. That’s why the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHSTA) is expanding an investigation related to the popular Bosch CP4 fuel pump.
This fuel pump has a bad reputation for causing catastrophic engine failure in heavy-duty Ram, Ford, and General Motors trucks.
Basically, the diesel used in America is not as lubricating as the diesel in Europe. Therefore, there is more wear between the cam and the roller, which leads to small metal shavings that can be released into the fuel system.
Pickup Truck Talk shared that the original CP4 research includes 2019-2022 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins engine.
The probe is now expanding to include the 2014-2022 Ram 1500, 2021-2022 Jeep Gladiator, 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2020-2022 Jeep Wrangler.
What if Ram has faulty pumps?
If the Ram 1500 is deemed at risk due to the Bosch CP4 fuel pump, it may receive a recall. All investigated vehicles could be recalled soon. Just wait for the investigation to happen.
If a recall occurs, the fuel pump will likely be replaced at no cost to owners. But this fix may not be enough. There are seven lawsuits related to the CP4 fuel pump because the alleged engine failure resulted in $10,000 or more in repair bills.
Automakers reportedly knew about the defective pumps and decided to use them anyway. But since these demands are quite widespread with several different vehicles included, it may take a while to see results.
If there is a recall, owners will be notified by mail and must return to a local dealer for service. We are not sure how long the investigation process may take.
So if you have a CP4 pump, Ram and GM trucks can be equipped with a CP3 pump. Ford owners can get a retrofit option or use a CP4.2 bypass kit from S&S Diesel Motorsport. Using an additive like LX4 Lubricity Extreme can also help prevent metal chips from forming.
How to tell if your Ram truck is at risk
Your Ram 1500 may be affected by metal shavings in the engine if you notice reduced power and a struggle to accelerate. Clogged oil is clogged or the filter could be damaged.
Metal shavings can prevent engine oil from going where it needs to go, causing knocking or ticking noises. Lack of proper lubrication could cause your engine to vibrate and lead to rough idling.
Also, metal shavings in the oil can cause the check engine light, oil pressure, and oil change indicator to illuminate on the dash.
We will follow this investigation to see if it turns into a recall or lawsuit. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
