The US Coast Guard (USCG) announced Thursday that it evacuated a 69-year-old motorboat captain 218 miles off the coast of Alabama on Wednesday.
Coast Guard Sector Mobile Watchers received a call at 12:17 p.m. via VHF-FM channel 16 from the crew aboard the motor vessel Overseas Anacortes that their captain was experiencing seizure-like symptoms heart, the USCG said in a statement posted on its website.
Watchmen consulted with the duty flight surgeon who recommended that the captain receive higher level medical attention within eight to 10 hours, the USCG added in the statement. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans was launched to assist, according to the USCG.
“The helicopter crew arrived on scene, extricated the captain and transported him to University Medical Center in New Orleans,” the USCG said in a statement from the organization.
“The captain was last reported to be in stable condition,” the USCG added.
OSG Ship Management Inc is the operator of the vessel Overseas Anacortes, OSG’s website shows. The vessel is an oil/chemical carrier built in 2010 with a length of 183.2 meters, a registered gross tonnage of 29,242 and a cargo capacity of 53,808 cubic meters, the OSG site notes.

Earlier this week, the USCG disclosed that it had evacuated a 59-year-old man from a towing vessel near Port Aransas, Texas, on Sunday.
The organization said in a separate statement posted on its site that watchdogs at the Corpus Christi Coast Guard sector received a medical evacuation request at 10:49 p.m. Saturday from the office of the harbor master in Corpus Christi “in which the 59-year-old captain of the tugboat Endurance stated that he was experiencing abdominal pain and nausea.”
“Watchmen consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medical evacuation,” the USCG said in the statement.
“Watchmen directed the launch of a 29-foot response vessel from Coast Guard Station Port Aransas, a small crew to assist,” the USCG added.
“The crew of the RB-S rendezvoused with the towboat, took the man aboard and transported him to waiting EMS personnel at Bahia Marina in Ingleside, Texas, in stable condition “, the organization continued.
