Railway News: Mechanics
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) announced yesterday that the first of 72 new Port Authority-Trans Hudson (PATH) rail cars will roll out for service starting next week.
The new rolling stock is part of the agency’s $1 billion PATH Improvement Plan to reduce delays and improve the rider experience. The new high-performance railcars will complement the current fleet of 350 and be phased into the system throughout 2023 and 2024, marking a more than 20 percent increase in rolling stock, PANYNJ officials said in a statement press
The 72 new cars will also complement the implementation of PATH’s new nine-car trains in service on the Newark-to-World Trade Center line. By early 2024, almost all trains on this line will be nine-car rush hour trains.
Adding a ninth car to trains during rush hour is part of a plan to increase capacity and provide a safer and more comfortable ride experience for riders on PATH’s busiest line, PATH officials said the port authority.
