About the incident
Shortly before 7pm on Wednesday, police were called to the intersection of Broad and Byfield streets for a report of the crash.
Police say after investigating and speaking with witnesses, they determined a Kawasaki dirt bike was operating at a high rate of speed in the northbound breakdown lane on Broad Street.
When the driver of a car in the Broad Street travel lane attempted to turn right onto Byfield Street, witnesses say the dirt bike failed to stop and the vehicles collided.
Witnesses told police that the rider of the dirt bike proceeded to ride on the sidewalk, hitting a pedestrian before colliding with a grocery cart, at which point the rider was ejected from his bike.
The operator of the dirt bike, José Mozco, 30, refused to cooperate with police; he was taken to RI Hospital for treatment.
Police say the passenger on the dirt bike, a woman in her 30s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to RI Hospital.
Mozco was arrested by police and faces numerous charges.
