Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India (HMSI) is reportedly recalling around 2,000 Honda CB300R motorcycles due to a potential fire hazard. According to various outlets, the recall stems from a faulty right crankcase cover (ie the clutch cover) that could allow oil to escape from the engine. If this oil comes into contact with a hot surface, it could ignite and cause a fire.
Obviously, a fire presents a serious accident hazard. But it also presents a direct risk if the hot oil comes into contact with the rider. And if the oil comes into contact with the bike’s tires, it could also cause a loss of traction and a crash.
According to Business Today, a press release from HMSI says the right crankcase cover may have been manufactured incorrectly. As a result, “… there is a risk that the sealing plug will come off due to inadequate holding force induced by engine heat.” This means that the heat from the engine can cause the screw oil cap to come loose and let oil out of the engine.
The motorcycles affected are the following:

Business Today quotes Honda as saying:
“As a precautionary measure, replacement of the affected parts will be carried out at BigWing dealers across India from 15th April 2023. The replacement will be done free of charge irrespective of the warranty status of the vehicle”.

Honda says its “BigWing” dealers will notify customers via call/email/SMS and advise them to bring their motorcycles to the dealers for inspection.
