North America dropped another 16 rigs weekly, according to Baker Hughes’ latest rotating rig count, which was released on April 6.
Canada cut 12 rigs week-over-week, while the US cut four in the same time period, bringing North America’s total rig count to 878, Baker Hughes noted in the tally. Canada’s cuts included six oil rigs and six gas rigs and the US cuts included two oil rigs and two gas rigs, Baker Hughes showed. Of the abandoned US platforms, three were onshore platforms and one was an offshore platform, the count noted.
Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Oklahoma each dropped a rig week-over-week, while Texas added a rig during the same time period, according to the rig count.
After rig reduction, the US rig count is 751, including 590 oil rigs, 158 gas rigs and three miscellaneous rigs, Baker Hughes noted. Of this total rig count, 733 are classified as onshore rigs, 17 as offshore rigs and one as an inland water rig. Canada’s rig count is 127, including 52 oil rigs and 75 gas rigs, Baker Hughes revealed.
North America added 78 rigs compared to a year ago, according to the count, which showed the US adding 62 of those rigs and Canada adding 16. The US added 44 rigs oil tankers, 17 gas platforms and a diverse platform year after year. and Canada added 17 gas rigs and dropped one oil rig year over year, the count noted.
In its previous rig count, which was released on March 31, Baker Hughes revealed that North America dropped 29 teams week-over-week. In the previous rig count, released on March 24, Baker Hughes showed that North America dropped 38 rigs week-over-week, and in its rig count released on March 17, the company revealed that North America North dropped eight teams week-to-week.
Baker Hughes’ March 10 rig count also showed a weekly drop of 26 rigs in North America, and its March 3 count revealed that North America shed two rigs week over week.
Baker Hughes, which has issued the oil rig count since 1944, describes the numbers as an important business barometer for the drilling industry and its suppliers. The company gets its work platform location information in part from Enverus, which produces daily equipment counts using GPS tracking units.
