CHICAGO (CBS) — Saturday night was a late night for some people living on Chicago’s Near North Side. The video shows what appears to be an illegal gathering of street cars in front of their homes at the corner of Wells and Oak.
Footage of the incident was posted on TikTok overnight. It lasts just under a minute but gives a good idea of the chaos that unfolded.
“There’s one of those encounters going on right now where people are doing donuts in the middle of the intersection. It’s very dangerous,” someone can be heard saying in the video.
And it certainly became a dangerous situation. Later in the video, a donut-making vehicle is shown making contact with one of the spectators.
According to the TikTok user, it all unfolded around 11pm
There was even an officer who responded to the scene who appeared to be inactive and not interacting with the crowd.
Almost 24 hours later, the remains of these tire marks were recovered at the intersection.
While such encounters are nothing new in the city, as CBS 2 has covered numerous illegal street racing incidents over the years, some even fatal, one resident said this is not a common occurrence. in this neighborhood
“I don’t know why the cop didn’t step in. I really don’t, but it’s really bad that this happened here. It was bad when it happened in the South Loop,” said Regan Burke.
CBS 2 reached out to CPD for more information on this incident. They say a call was made to report the incident, but a report was never filed because no one was at the scene when officers arrived.
