A three-car crash in Woodland, Calif., on Saturday was allegedly caused by a 13-year-old boy.
A teenager’s reckless actions led to a three-car fire in California over the weekend that left one dead and several injured, police say.
The Woodland Police Department said in a statement that an officer saw a car being driven “erratically” Saturday afternoon. The officer attempted to pull over the driver, but the driver eluded police, sparking a pursuit. The pursuit ended when the car they were following crashed into two other vehicles at an intersection, causing two vehicles to catch fire.
A woman was killed in the crash and at least 10 people were injured, including three children, police later told NBC News. A small child had to be airlifted to a hospital due to his injuries.
Police said in a statement that an investigation determined a 13-year-old boy was responsible for the fatal crash. The teenager allegedly stole the car from a relative, NBC reports.
The forest police announced In the early hours of Sunday, the teenage driver had been arrested for a crime of involuntary manslaughter due to negligence and evasion of injuries. After the teenager is released from the hospital, he is expected to be booked into Yolo County Juvenile Hall.
Images obtained by NBC of the aftermath of the crash show the extent of the devastation (above). Several wrecked and burning vehicles are seen, with one car leaning on top of another.
Relatives of the woman who died in the crash told CBS her name was Tina Vital. Vital was in the car with his two children and a grandson at the time of the accident. Local news station KCRA reports that Vital, 43, died just hours after attending a celebration of life ceremony for a family member who had recently died. A makeshift memorial for Vital has been set up at the site of his death.
Manuel Fierro, who went to school with Vital, left flowers at his memorial on Easter Sunday.
“When most of us are reunited with our families today, she won’t be,” Fierro told KCRA. “So I brought her some roses and just said my goodbyes.”
