An adult entertainment site in Iowa is in hot water with its employees. Nine exotic dancers have joined a class-action lawsuit alleging the club made the dancers work without pay and then forced them to pay the owner for the right to receive tips.
The Des Moines Register reports that the initial lawsuit was filed in 2022 by former dancer Cierra Turner against Pretty Woman Inc., owner of the Beach Girls adult club in West Des Moines, Iowa. The lawsuit alleges violations of state and federal minimum wage laws, unjust enrichment and unfair tipping. Turner’s lawyers are seeking to convert the lawsuit into a class-action legal filing, which would allow them to combine the claims of multiple dancers into a single proceeding, according to the Register.
The Register reports that the process requires lawyers and the court to notify other Beach Girls dancers of their rights to join the lawsuit if they choose. After receiving the notice, they can decide whether they want to join the lawsuit as co-plaintiffs. They have 90 days to decide.
In recent weeks, nine more dancers have joined the demand. The lawyers claim the club misclassified its dancers as “independent contractors” who were not subject to minimum wage laws. I’m no legal expert, but I would expect these women to win. No matter what your profession is, you are entitled to a salary.
