The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime is shaping up to be a hit. It has 220 hp, 44 miles of electric range and, for the first time in Prius history, a sleek and attractive design. The only real negative about the previous car is the price. While the 2022 Prius Prime started at $29,865 with destination charge required, the new one starts at $33,870.
It’s a remarkable jump, but when you consider that the new Prius has 99 more hp to use (for a total of 220), a much nicer interior, better handling, a fresher design, a quieter cabin and 19 more miles of all-electric range, seems reasonable. Top-level XSE Premium models have even more gadgets, including an optional digital rearview mirror, heated and ventilated front seats, available heated rear seats, and a park assist system with automatic braking. Opt for all the features and the MSRP jumps to $42,325.
That sounds like a lot for a Prius in normal times, but in these days of stratospheric payments, it’s actually nearly seven grand below the national average new vehicle transaction price. That buys you a fully loaded car with 44 miles of electric range, a spacious cabin, plenty of power, great design, and all the tech gadgets you (don’t really) need. We’d probably get a base or mid-range model, but any Prius Prime seems like a good value. It’s a shame that because it’s built in Japan, it’s not eligible for any federal tax incentives.
