Most people use Bring a Trailer to buy cars, but you can also use the platform to buy boats, parts, or one of the craziest slot car racing tracks you’ll ever see.
An impressive 1:32 scale track made by Slot Mods is currently on offer on the popular online platform (via Drive). While the track itself is a sight to behold, what really sets it apart from its peers is the fact that it sits inside the body of a Porsche 917 replica.
Detroit-based Slot Mods are famous for their museum-worthy custom wooden slot car tracks. Getting one of the tricky tracks can be a tricky proposition, however, requiring a lot of money and patience. If you don’t mind not having a hand in designing the runway, this auction offers one of the fastest ways to get your hands on one of the shop’s gorgeous creations.
However, we don’t think many people will mind not having ordered this beauty. The course is a faithful recreation of the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit as it appeared in the 1971 Steve McQueen film. Le Mans. It features a pit lane with 19 vintage cars and equipment, including the Gulf-livery 917 that the actor’s character, Michael Delaney, drives in the film. The double-groove track, which measures 13 feet by six feet, is constructed of wood and features a hand-painted centerline, shoulder stripes and Armco-style rails, according to the listing. Meanwhile, the player station is equipped with power switches and a pair of analog activation controllers so that two cars can be raced at once.
As impressive as the course looks, it’s almost outdone by its shell: the track is built inside the body of a replica 917 race car. Although slightly smaller than the actual Le Mans racer, the vehicle wears the same blue and orange livery as McQueen’s ride from the film and has working headlights and taillights. The body of the car is closed when the track is not in use, but when you are ready to race, it can be opened by remote control.
Can you imagine how this slot car track will look in your den? You’ll want to move fast to make it yours. The auction will last until Tuesday afternoon. At press time, bidding had already reached $91,000, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it go even higher.
