Porsche Motorsport celebrates a major milestone with the production of its 5,000th Cup 911 race car based on the Porsche 911 model. The first Cup 911 was built in 1990 for the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland and has since become in one of the world’s most produced racing vehicles, with 34 single-make Porsche-sanctioned cup series contested worldwide.
The 911 Cup has evolved from a technology-based production model to a thoroughbred racing car, with the current Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (992 series model). The latest 911 GT3 Cup features a computer-assisted safety cell, a sequential dog box transmission with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, carbon fiber body and cabin components, and a rear wing that can adjust in 11 positions.
The six-cylinder boxer engine, rated at 503 horsepower, is virtually identical to the road-legal Porsche 911 GT3 except for the racing exhaust system and special engine electronics. Unchanged power means the four-litre naturally aspirated engine does not need to be serviced for an entire Supercup or Carrera Cup season.
“More than 5,000 Cup 911s: this impressive number symbolizes the enormous success of our single-brand Porsche Cups worldwide like no other. It also represents the high level of popularity that Porsche enjoys among teams, professionals racers, young drivers and amateur racers around the world. No other Porsche racing car has been produced in such large numbers or raced more frequently,” said Oliver Koppen, manager of One -Make Series and GT Sport, Porsche Motorsport Sales.
In fact, Porsche has built so many Cup 911s, it has built more than most road-legal, special edition models from other brands.
The 911 Cup racing car is produced on the same assembly line as the Porsche 911 production models at the main Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen facility, with an average build time of around eight hours. For the 2023 season, a special Porsche 911 GT3 Cup campaign will be run in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, driven by prominent guest drivers in selected rounds of the one-make international cup. Race car number 5,000 will feature a commemorative livery that will set it apart from the rest of the field.
