The South West security outfit, Amotekun Corps, foiled a carjacking attack on the Akure-Ilesa Expressway and recovered a vehicle loaded with motor oil.
Corps Commander in Osun, Brigadier General. Bashir Adewinmbi (Retd.), told newsmen in Osogbo on Saturday that the robbers attacked vehicles on the Ileki/Osu axis of the Ilesha-Akure road for almost an hour.
He said a motorcyclist who escaped the robbers’ ambush alerted an Amotekun patrol team at about 11.46pm and the latter gave chase to the robbers.
“The robbers ambushed vehicles and were firing into the air, forcing drivers to park, abandon their vehicles and run into the bushes for safety.
“When the robbers, however, saw that the Amotekun patrol team was coming for them, they fled the scene after operating on the road for almost an hour,” he said.
Adewinmbi added that after the robbers fled, a truck loaded with diesel and petrol but abandoned by its driver was recovered and taken to Amotekun’s office in Osogbo.
He said that through the door sheets found in the recovered truck, the owner of the goods was contacted and the driver and his assistant who ran into the bush were contacted.
He said the driver explained that they were traveling from Lagos and on their way to Abuja via Lokoja when they were ambushed.
Adewinmbi said the vehicle, with the goods intact, was handed over to the driver on Saturday in Osogbo in the presence of police officers from Ayeso Police Station, Ilesha, which covers the jurisdiction of the incident.
He said the police commended the Amotekun team for their efforts and sought more collaboration in tackling the rise in road robberies, especially along the Owena-Ile-Ife Expressway in Osun .
Adewinmbi warned drivers, especially those carrying goods or expensive items, against traveling at night.
He stressed that if they have to move at night, they must be careful about the routes they have taken.
