Medical helicopters went to the scene on Friday.
Two migrants died and at least a dozen others were injured after they were trapped in a train car in Uvalde County, Texas, police said Friday.
Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin told ABC News that a total of 17 people were trapped in the dumpster. Two died, five were life-flighted to Sant Antoni and another seven were transported in ambulances. Three migrants were “fine,” the mayor said.
He did not know whether the migrants called 911 or their families to tell authorities they were trapped on the train.
McLaughlin said “we have to look at the southern border, this happens every day, if it’s not my city, it’s somebody else’s or our county… It’s every day down here.”
Medical helicopters had responded to the scene in an area of U.S. Highway 90 near Knippa, Uvalde police said on Facebook Friday evening.
The incident was not a derailment, a source told ABC News.
The portion of the highway, which runs parallel to the area’s train tracks, was closed between Uvalde and Sabinal but reopened Friday afternoon, police said.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the scene.
Knippa is about 70 miles west of San Antonio.
