JACKSON, MI — A five-year contract renewal will keep the Jackson Police Department’s in-car camera system updated at a cost of about $281,000, officials said.
The Jackson City Council on Tuesday approved a contract with Axon Enterprise, an Arizona-based company that develops technology for the military and law enforcement.
The five-year contract includes annual payments of $56,296, for a total of $281,477.
The department has been using Axon’s in-car camera system since 2019, Elmer Hitt, Jackson’s director of police and fire services, said in a letter to the council. The current contract will end in October.
“The Jackson Police Department has had some type of in-car camera system for 20 years,” Hitt said. “Videos from car cameras are a tool to show evidence of what happens during contacts with citizens.”
The new contract will run through October 2028, officials said.
With the contract approved, Axon plans to move forward with the upgrade and replacement of all in-car camera systems for JPD’s fleet, which is expected to happen by November 2023.
