There is not a single part, but the proliferation of poorly made or fake “OEM QUALITY” auto parts. Amazon is attractive for wrenches on a budget because you can often get cheaper parts shipped to you in a couple of days.
Let’s say I drive an old but still reliable Corolla from the mid 2000’s. There’s horrible spray from the front end and the ride has deteriorated, and a quick inspection reveals rusty, leaky struts and bushings are shot . I check AutoZone down the street, but they want $270 for a set of DuraLast quick struts. Then check out Amazon:
Ah, now it’s more like it. Buy the cheaper $100 struts, notice they don’t seem to fit well, but hey, it will work. You install them over the weekend and all is well.
Until after six months and they call again.
Now, I know it’s not a given that this happens. And I know that sometimes you just HAVE to buy the cheapest parts you can find so you can get to work and back. But I’ve burned myself too many times by buying the cheapest parts I could find, when I could have found better parts with just a little digging:
I know the Monroes aren’t the best these days, but this is the same price as the cheap struts on Amazon. Heck, a set of KYBs for a Corolla at Rock Auto is just over $100.
For certain things, it’s okay to go to Amazon. But for critical vehicle components (brake rotors, suspension bits, internal engine parts, gaskets, anything where replacing the part would be a real pain if it fails), just go to the auto parts store or a reputable online store and get the brand. party
Also, can we take a moment to appreciate this: CHASING MAKES PERFECTION
Now that was a trip. And also a great lesson for all the young, naive kids reading this who might assume that what they read in an ad must be true. And while we’re at it, definitely don’t roll down your window regulators. Ask me how I know.
