TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – It’s the dog at the center of a police chase that stole the hearts of so many people on social media.
“He didn’t have a microchip. He didn’t have a license, but he’s not from our county anyway,” said Cassie Bloomfield, community outreach coordinator for Lucas County Canine Care and Control (LC4).
After a police chase on I-75 ended in a crash at the Bancroft exit last Thursday night, the suspects ran, flagged down a TARTA bus and were caught. Meanwhile, a small chihuahua also ran from the crash site straight into the arms of onlookers. She was turned over to a Toledo police officer who took the dog to the LC4.
13abc posted pictures on Facebook of the dog who survived the ordeal and was seen by her owner.
“We had someone come up and claim the dog, very happy to see us. Very sweet,” Bloomfield said.
Bloomfield says the dog, whose name is Baby, is finally home. Right now, there’s no telling how Baby got mixed up in the chase. His owner tells Bloomfield that he has no idea who the suspects are.
“It would be very interesting to know what happened to our little chihuahua friend that night. He left his home with his beloved mother, potentially on a high speed police chase, was found by a policeman, kissed, came here to this strange place and they came home. Like, what an interesting adventure, a little excursion for her to go on,” Bloomfield added.
LC4 vets gave Baby medical treatment and after three days he was placed in county custody. So they sterilized her too. Today, March 14, 2023, Baby was picked up by her owner and brought back to Bedford Twp., MI.
“It’s definitely a happy ending for her. We’re very happy that she was able to come home to her mom, safe and sound at home. That’s where she should be, and I’m glad that’s where she ended up.” explain Bloomfield.
As for the suspects in the chase, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are working to get us more information.
