With more than 910,000 new registrations in January, the European passenger car market expanded by 11 percent year-on-year.
In accordance with EV volumes The data, shared by José Pontes, in January saw the registration of 158,727 new connected passenger cars in Europe (up 3% year-on-year). This is a positive result, but the growth rate was lower than the general market.
We assume that this is a natural result of the December rush (before the reduction or end of some incentives in select markets) and that the situation will improve later.
According to the data, sales of all-electric cars were up 14 percent (so market share is still growing), but plug-in hybrids were down 10 percent year-on-year.
Registration of new connected cars:
- BEV: *93,000 (14% more from one year to the next) and a 10% fee
- PHEV: *65,000 (10% less year-on-year) and a 7% fee
- Total: 158,727 (+3% year-on-year) and 17% share
* estimated from market share
For reference, in 2022 more than 2.6 million new plug-in electric passenger cars were registered in Europe. That’s about 23 percent of total volume (compared to 19 percent a year earlier and 11 percent two years ago).
- BEV: about *1.58 million and 14% share
- PHEV: about *1.02 million and 9% share
- Total: 2,602,431 and 23% share
* estimated from market share

Interestingly, the second most popular model was the Volvo XC40 (5,876), but really only if you count the BEV and PHEV versions together.
The third most popular was the Dacia Spring (4,239), which once again indicates the popularity of small, affordable and entry-level electric vehicles.
