It’s not every day you see a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is used for its intended purpose. Originally designed for the German military, the box truck is built to ford streams, climb rocky surfaces and move through sand. Unfortunately, like many luxury SUVmost G-Wagons are found being driven leisurely around rich cities for people to flaunt their wealth and prestige.
Fortunately, there are people in the world like WhistlinDiesel on YouTube trying to find the limit of all the expensive vehicles he can get his hands on. Their modus operandi is to torture test cars in a way that no one has done before. In the latest video of his red Mercedes-AMG G63, Mr. Diesel (aka Cody Detwiler) pits the brute German against an old farm tractor in an epic tug-of-war.
How does a tractor stack up to Mercedes power?
In stock configuration, the G63 makes 577 hp with its hand-built twin-turbo V8, but this one was tuned to over 1,000 horsepower. Combined with its sophisticated all-wheel drive system and locking differentials, it’s certainly a force to be reckoned with in a stretch match. Its competitor is a classic farm tractor that was also purchased by Detwiler. The machine is a Farmall 1206 and produces 125 horsepower and 12,000 pounds of pulling power from its 5.9L 6-cylinder turbodiesel engine.
After starting the tractor from the transport trailer, the action begins. In the first round, the tractor finds some grip and after a brief stall, the old Farmall drags the tuned G63 into its corner. Even while popping a couple of small rollers, the tractor manages to pull the mighty Mercedes kicking and screaming across a parking lot at Atlanta Motorsports Park.
In round two, the AMG SUV decides it’s had enough of this nonsense. The WhistlinDiesel crew points out that it’s extremely noticeable that a tractor, on the pavement, pulls into the back of the G-Wagon early on. However, the G63’s sheer power overwhelms the piece of farm equipment and lifts it a good distance away, its huge tractor tires sending out plumes of smoke in protest.
Tie breaker: the old tractor surprises the young German
For the third tug-of-war, the tractor leads the way to victory, but the G63’s exhaust note sounds glorious regardless. This is helped by the fact that the standard exhaust was replaced with a $9,000 Akrapovic system. Then, to increase his chances of winning, WhistlinDiesel recruits five people to get into the Mercedes. On the first try, the tractor still gets the best of the G-Class, but the next matchup has a result too close to ask.
Surprisingly, in the final round, the AMG transmission does not give up on WhistlinDiesel. That alone is quite a feat considering the abuse the G63 has already suffered at the hands of the YouTuber. Barely touching the gas, the red German climbs to a small margin of victory. Afterwards, Detwiler mentions to his colleague that he thinks G could have pulled even harder.
The red G63 in the video has seen anything but a normal life. Since taking delivery, the boys and girls at WhistlinDiesel have really tested the limits of Mercedes’ toughest product. Besides giving it a full launch into a bottomless sinkhole and landing a 91-foot jump off a sand dune, the truck has seen worse. Earlier in the video, Detwiler shares the story of why the AMG needed its engine replaced.
WhistlinDiesel doesn’t pretend to be easy on cars
His first torture test involved the G-Wagon being lifted completely by one wheel and then dropped onto a film set. The truck suffered severe body damage as a result of the fall, but the rollover revealed more catastrophic news. As Detwiler explains, when the G63 landed on its side, engine oil entered the air intake and blocked the engine. Despite the expensive repair costs, the AMG specialists at Premier Tuning Group replaced the seized engine in no time.
While at Atlanta Motorsports Park, WhistlinDiesel and his crew put the G63 and its new engine through some tough testing on the track. Despite going through a wall of tires, clipping some trees, and skidding through a gravel trap at top speed, the G-Wagon pulls along like a champ. Its bumpers and fender flares get chewed up by stunts, but Mercedes is no stranger to getting its body ripped off.
Later, for an interesting demonstration, the local sheriff’s office agrees to pit the German Jeep. This is a (usually) high-speed maneuver to spin a vehicle to end a dangerous road chase. At moderate speeds, the patrol car impressively dispatches the 6,000 lbs. Side SUV, ending its aspirations. Later, police officers deliver a message to the community warning people to keep the fun on the trail, because it’s not worth going to jail.
Let America’s youth push the limits of a German military-turned-civilian truck. Thanks to the ingenuity and bravery of WhistlinDiesel, the buying public has relevant consumer advice on the Mercedes-AMG G63. We’re sure potential G-Wagon customers will be impressed by its proven ability to win a few tug-of-wars against an old 1960s farm tractor. ThanksCody.
