A Spanish father-son duo have been jailed for fraud after falsely reporting the theft of their Renault Megane after crashing it at a track day, published in Spanish Europa Press reports
The younger of the duo took the Renault hatch to a track day at the Circuit de Jarama, a track north of Madrid, in 2021. Europa Press reports There, he rolled the car with a passenger inside, but both escaped unhurt. Instead of properly reporting the incident, the son allegedly conspired with his father to cover up the incident by reporting the car stolen in a town more than four hours north of the track.
The duo’s insurance company ended up paying the father 12,000 euros (about $13,000) to cover the damage, he says Europa Press. But when the wrecked car never returned to the company, the insurance company contacted the police. Further investigation uncovered several videos on social media showing the Megane on various occasions on track.
It’s unclear what happened to the car after the crash, however Europa Press suggests it was sold to a third party for parts. The father and son have been arrested and charged with fraud, although the report does not specify what kind of punishment they will face.
