Yes, folks, the future of electric vehicles is here. He’s been here. And now it’s off to Alfa Romeo, where the beloved but also infamous Alfa Romeo Giulia will go electric for its next generation.
According to a report by coach, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has confirmed that the Giulia will be all-electric, and has even offered details on charging speed, range, tuning and how power levels will be stratified in the whole range. Most importantly for enthusiasts, details on the high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio.
The current Giulia Quadrifoglio has been around for a while, and during that time it has undergone some tests. It’s ultra-quick and handles very well, but some reviewers experienced early reliability issues that marred their perception of the Giulia. In its current iteration, the Giulia uses two engines: a turbocharged inline-four and a twin-turbo Ferrari-derived 90-degree V6.
These will be dropped entirely in favor of EV powertrain options. The lowest trim will offer 345 hp from an unknown amount of motors, likely only feeding a single axle. The Veloce, which currently has 280 hp, will have around 790 hp. Finally, the top trim Quadrifoglio will offer around 1,000 hp, which will almost certainly be all-wheel drive but with an as-yet-unknown number of engines.
Imparato also impressed upon the importance of range and charging speed for the upcoming Giulia, suggesting a range of 435 miles on the European WLTP cycle and confirming that the car will have an 800-volt charging architecture that will allow charging between 10% and 80% “. in 18 minutes.” There’s no word on the battery the car will use, or its kWh rating. Finally, Imperato confirmed that a small SUV, potentially called the Brennero, is coming, as well as a large sedan to compete with the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S .
Alfa Romeo has committed to moving to a fully electric vehicle. Whether this will boost the brand’s sales remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: it will be fast.
