Mercedes introduces a new proprietary MB.OS built around infotainment and payment software

Mercedes wants to streamline production and upgrades while making extra money for remote software updates

Along with a number of other big announcements from Mercedes Benz today, including of course the interior of the 2024 E-Class sedan, it’s building its own proprietary operating system. MB.OS will not only serve as the future infotainment interface for Mercedes models, but will also support software updates, automated driving features and more.

Building an operating system will give Mercedes more power over how the system works both internally and at the customer level. In this case, MB.OS will have a chip-to-cloud architecture and will integrate software and hardware from key technology players in the space such as Google.

Mercedes says that MB.OS will connect to all major aspects of the company’s value chain “including development, production and trade and omnichannel services.” To put it more simply, it’s not just about improving an infotainment experience. It’s about Mercedes having the power to adjust their software over a longer period of time.

Just one example of how this is possible is improving the automated driving experience. Mercedes has partnered with NVIDIA to create a “driving brain,” as it calls it. The system is capable of 254 trillion operations per second in an effort to process data from numerous vehicle sensors. At the backbone of the system is the ability to integrate machine learning which is primarily supported by MB.OS in partnership with NVIDIA.

The new operating system will still work to improve the infotainment experience. Mercedes says it will leverage its partnership with Google to integrate its own branded navigation experience. This will include in-car data and navigation capabilities through the Google Maps platform. Additionally, when using the standalone Drive Pilot Level 3 feature, drivers can use the YouTube app embedded in the software.

Free? Not too fast

It will even work with Antstream for in-car arcade-style gaming and with in-car video conferencing apps like Zoom and Webex. Note, however, that none of these features are promised as free upgrades or standard features. Mercedes knows it can ultimately charge more with MB.OS and clearly plans to.

It says it generated more than a billion euros in software revenue in 2022 and expects more than a billion in earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) by 2025. Software is such a vital piece of the puzzle that the The automaker says it will allocate a quarter of its research and development budget to it by mid-decade. Expect to see the first production cars with MB.OS at the same time on the upcoming MMA platform.
