South Africa is set for another massive fuel hike, and the cost of living is consistently unbearable for most.

One of the best fuel saving tips that actually work is to maintain your car and make sure it is serviced regularly and on time. It will keep your vehicle running smoothly and fuel efficiently. When should I repair my car?
When your car should be serviced varies between manufacturers, but as a general guideline, minor vehicle services are usually done every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers, and major car services usually between 30,000 and 45,000 kilometers. . Check your car’s manual to confirm your vehicle’s specific maintenance requirements. Most modern cars have a service light on the dashboard that lets you know when a service is due.
What does minor and major service entail?
“Minor services usually include a full vehicle system, diagnostic check and oil filter change; checking all fluid levels, filter condition, tubes and hoses for leaks; fan belt and pad inspection brake,” says Johnny Pretorius, director of sales at MotorHappy, a provider of motor management solutions and auto insurance options. “The service will also include checking all lights and tire pressure.
“A major car service is the most comprehensive type of car service, with a full vehicle inspection.
“It includes the exterior of the vehicle, hinges and latches, and the timing belt. It usually includes spark plugs and filters, changing transmission and differential oils, and checking the brake and clutch fluid. This is also when the oil in the wheel bearings and replaced if necessary.

“These are just some of the items that would be covered in a major car service, as the technician works through a comprehensive checklist that ensures your car is inspected from top to bottom. If the technician spots any problem during service, you should receive a quote for any additional work that may be required,” advises Pretorius.
In this tough financial climate, cash-strapped motorists may be tempted to skip car services, but Pretorius says that could be a costly mistake in the long run.
“A car consists of complex systems that need regular maintenance to keep the vehicle in good roadworthy condition. When you service your car according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, it is more fuel efficient and you minimize the risk of breakdown and repair unexpected. bills. As the saying goes, take care of your car in the garage, and the car will take care of you on the road.”
If you miss any service, your car’s warranty may be void. Keep a close eye on the recommended time period or miles between car services.

Pretorius points out that a car with a full service history is often more valuable than one without one because it shows the overall condition of the vehicle, who did the work and when the work was done. The service history will also show if the car has received any recalls or required any warranty or major repairs.
“A good car service plan will help you service your car on time. Car maintenance can be expensive, but with a service plan, you can budget for that cost with easy monthly payments. There are different products on the market of the Service Plan, and the benefits may differ slightly from one product to another, so it is best to shop.”
What about older cars?
Maitland Auto Clinic owner Paul Kasker says with older vehicles it’s best to have a minor service and inspection every 12 months or 15,000km.
Kasker says, “We don’t just do oil changes because things tend to break, if you don’t do an inspection service, it means you’re missing an opportunity to catch a problem with a part before it breaks.
“I suggest an inspection service that includes a minor service and a vehicle inspection. The vehicle inspection should include a suspension check and a basic or visual electrical check, including battery, cables and charging speed . Checking belts, tensioners and pulleys when stripping is not necessary. Inspection of front and rear brakes (as sliders seize or wheel cylinders begin to leak) and adjacent when necessary.”
He says a car’s gas filter should be changed every 45,000 kilometers and a timing belt usually every 90,000 kilometers, unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
Kasker adds that once your mechanic has a track record of servicing your vehicle, he may choose to perform minor services every other service, as he would be confident in the longevity and replacement times of the parts installed.
