Travelers experiencing long wait times for Orlando car rentals
Demand for rental cars is creating long lines at Orlando International Airport. Some people who booked months in advance say it takes hours to get their cars. Orlando airport officials say the backup is due to a combination of things. An OIA spokesman says the Daytona 500 has made for a busy weekend with big crowds and car companies have been getting late car returns from customers. As a result, some of the companies are forced to transport cars to Orlando from other parts of Florida. “It’s been a long wait for both the bags and the car,” said Adam Gregor, a commuter. “It’s vacation. Who wants to miss part of their vacation?” “The gentleman in line pointed to me like, ‘You can go all the way down,'” said Denny Tran, a commuter. The line to pick up a rental car almost looked like a line to catch a flight on Sunday. “I have a reservation maybe three months ago,” said Marcio Peres, a traveler. “I booked this like a month before,” said Tran. “Usually when I rent a car, I’m able to go get the keys to the same car and all the paperwork is already done and that’s ridiculous,” Gregor said. WESH 2 saw a similar sight over the holidays after thousands of flights, mostly from Southwest, were canceled. As a result, cars rentals were short. This time, the backup is for different reasons. “Right now, we have a backup plan and it’s Hertz, but if this continues to be bad, we’ll try something else here and maybe just take an Uber to the our hotel and fingers crossed,” Gregor said. “I think I’ll take a car,” said Rob, a commuter. “I’m feeling positive all t emps.” After the cars are returned, they go through a cleaning and preparation routine before the next customer can pick them up, which is why late returns are causing a huge delay. While airport officials can’t do much, they are talking to rental car companies to come up with a solution plan.
