The latest chapter in the exciting story of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is ready to be told, with the fire-breathing GR Corolla arriving in Australian showrooms in March.
Joining the GR86, GR Supra and GR Yaris in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing high-performance family, the GR Corolla is offered in highly-specified GTS grade priced from $62,300 plus on-road costs.1.
Toyota Australia has secured 700 units of the GR Corolla GTS for sale in its first year, to be joined in the coming months by the limited-run Morizo Edition, of which only 25 will be available, further increasing performance with a range of exclusive characteristics.
Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Franchising Sean Hanley said the arrival of the new GR Corolla represented a historic occasion for the nameplate.
“For decades, the Corolla has been one of Australia’s best-loved models, selling more than 1.5 million units since it first arrived in 1967,” Mr Hanley said.
“Motorsport has long been part of Corolla’s DNA, so to have a full version of our venerable small car is a huge thrill.”
Based on the popular Corolla hatch, the GR Corolla is underpinned by the acclaimed TNGA-C platform, significantly enhanced for high-performance driving dynamics.
GR Corolla features a turbocharged petrol engine, all-wheel drive, wider track front and rear, completely revised suspension and design features and styling enhancements that clearly set it apart from the rest of the Corolla family.
The GR Corolla is powered by the same high-performance 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine found in the GR Yaris, which has been tuned to produce a boosted 221kW of power at 6500rpm and 370Nm of torque at a wider revolution band, from 3000. -5550 rpm.
The improved output has been achieved through improvements such as the triple outlet exhaust that reduces back pressure, strengthened pistons and exhaust valves and increased capacity of the direct injection fuel pump and the engine oil cooler.
All GR Corollas are equipped with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with intelligent rev-matching technology, designed to provide maximum driver enjoyment.
The Morizo editions push the envelope further, extracting around an extra 30Nm of torque from the turbocharged engine, while tweaking the gear ratios makes better use of the extra torque.
The GR Corolla employs the sophisticated GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system, compatible with Torsen, ensuring exceptional handling and cornering performance.®2 Limited-slip differentials on both front and rear axles for optimal torque distribution.
Optimized suspension geometry, extensive chassis reinforcements, weight reduction and dedicated ventilated disc brakes contribute to an exhilarating driving experience, with the Morizo Edition offering even more weight reduction and structural reinforcement.
Exterior upgrades for both variants include unique front and rear bumpers to accommodate the wider track, additional air ducts to improve aerodynamics and cooling, a special triple-exit exhaust system, bonnet raised and unique 18-inch alloy wheels shod with high-performance Yokohama tires. .
Morizo Editions get their own 18-inch BBS forged dark silver alloys with sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, as well as a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) roof that helps reduce overall weight and center of gravity of the car.
The functional design of the exterior is mirrored inside, with interior changes that reflect the GR Corolla’s status as the ultimate hot hatch.
All trims get a dedicated shifter and center console, aluminum pedals, manual parking brake and a leather-wrapped steering wheel adapted from the GR Yaris.
Connectivity is enhanced with an 8.0-inch touchscreen that houses Toyota’s latest multimedia system, which includes Toyota Connected Services.3combined with a fully digital 12.3-inch multi-information display and a color head-up display to provide the driver with a comprehensive set of readouts.
The touchscreen supports Android Auto™ by wire4 and wireless Apple CarPlay®5includes DAB+ digital radio6 and satellite navigation7and offers improved usability and dynamic speech recognition.
Heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless phone charger8dual-zone climate control and an eight-speaker JBL®2 The premium sound system offers welcome amenities on GTS trims.
The front seats provide excellent support for occupants, with suede and synthetic leather upholstery and contrasting silver stitching.
Along with the removal of the 60:40 split-folding rear seats to save weight, the Morizo Edition differs on the inside with unique front seats with contrasting red stitching, red seat belts, suede steering wheel trim, shift lever and parking brake. a red center marker for the steering wheel and an alumita red trim on the gear knob.
While offering amazing performance, the GR Corolla also comes with a full suite of Toyota Safety Sense9 active safety technologies to guarantee maximum protection for the occupants.
New features such as intersection turn assist are available thanks to improved camera and radar sensors, which improve 3D object and motion detection while extending the range of cameras and radars .9
The GTS grades are available with four different exterior color options, consisting of Glacier White, Ebony, Liquid Mercury Metallic and Feverish Red Mica Metallic.10
The Morizo Edition will be offered in a choice of Frosted White pearl, Tarmac Black metallic and the exclusive Matte Steel.10
