Canning City Council aims to educate the community and support positive recycling habits to ensure kerbside bins are used correctly through the seventh round of bin labeling starting on 20 February 2023.
The eight-week program will take place in parts of East Cannington, Bentley, Cannington, Riverton, Canning Vale, Queens Park, Shelley, Lynwood and two areas of Willetton.
In partnership with the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), the program provides direct feedback to residents on how to use general waste and recycling bins correctly, to support sustainability, the environment and increase recovery of the resources.
Every fortnight, waste education officers will look inside kerbside bins in selected areas and provide feedback in the form of a sticker to help residents ensure they are using bins correctly.
The labels will show a happy or sad face and detail more information about the use of the bins and what can be improved.
City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said educating residents on how to recycle properly is an important step in the city’s plan for a climate-resilient future.
“Taking the time to educate people on how to properly use curbside bins allows people to recycle the right way, which helps the city’s plan for a low-carbon future,” the mayor said.
“It also allows the City to send less waste to landfill and recycle more, reducing processing costs associated with contaminated containers.”
During the previous bin labeling round, the most common mistakes found in Council recycling bins were soft plastics such as chip bags, plastic bags and lollipop wrappers.
Residents can make further improvements by ensuring that only rinsed containers without lids are placed in the recycling bin, that recyclables are not bagged, and that all meat trays are placed in the general bin.
E-waste and household hazardous waste such as aerosols, paint, herbicides and motor oil cannot be disposed of in kerbside bins and must be disposed of at a collection point such as a waste transfer station from the city to Canning Vale.
